Susanna Gore is featured on this week's episode of Nicstalgia. I ask her what a 2000s kid time capsule would look like, and she tells me about her favorite 80s, 90s, and 00s memorabilia. We touch upon Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag’s “How to be Famous” book, Bump Its, and old shows that did not age well, like Saved By The Bell.
We play "Making The Band", where Susanna builds her own super band. (Spoiler alert: BSB may just be the perfect boy band to begin with.)
What was life like without “Toxic” by Britney Spears?? Luckily, anyone born after 2004 will never have to know!! We obviously discuss the ILL (Impact, Life, and Legacy) of The Legendary Miss Britney Spears™️. She hopes that next gen kids can enjoy some of the nostalgic shows that we did, and we agree that people will be watching The Simple Life for generations.

🛼 Haven’t You Heard?!
My fav things from the internet rn:
I’m a contributor to RADAR, the first community-owned and powered futures engine, discovering, incubating, and delivering better futures for all. RADAR recently released its A Future In Sync report (not to be confused with a future *NSYNC). It basically says how we – culturally, societally, globally – are out of sync with one another and how we can build/make/create in order to create the kind of future we want to see.
There is literally no way that I wasn’t a competitor in the Crystal Light National Aerobic Championship USA 1988 in a past life. (I was both a competitive dancer and aerobics teacher in this lifetime, so I did my best there.) I’m sure you’ve seen the countless memes from this event, but have you watched the championship in its entirety??? Now you can.
This month marks the 25th anniversary of Mariah Carey’s Butterfly album. Let’s celebrate!!! Enjoy Another Taste Of Honey, a behind the scenes look at the making of Mariah’s 1997 “Honey” music video; a rerecording of The Roof (When I Feel the Need) with Brandy; NPR’s Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast episode, The music and meaning of Mariah Carey; and technically unrelated to Butterfly but still notable, the latest news on the release of her secret 1995 alt-rock album.
📹 Pop-Up Video
My favorite genre of music video is where the blonde singer puts on a brunette wig to become the “bad girl”. Literally, she’s the same girl with 2 different hair colors. Figuratively, she represents the light and dark parts of herself that have to face one another in order for her to work through her trauma and emerge triumphantly on the other side. (We love shadow work.) These songs are all top tier!!!
“Gimme More” by Britney Spears
“Toxic” by Britney Spears
“Girlfriend” by Avril Lavigne
“Heartbreaker” by Mariah Carey featuring Jay-Z
“Boy (I Need You)” by Mariah Carey featuring Cam’ron
“You Belong With Me” by Taylor Swift
💿 Hey Mr. DJ, put a [playlist] on
Playlist of the week:
Our recent podcast guest Susanna loves reality TV from the 00s, so our playlist features songs by reality stars Paris Hilton, Heidi Montag, Scheana Marie, Danity Kane, Kesha, (Remember when she was on The Simple Life??) and Kim Kardashian. The Vanderpump Rules theme song is also in there.
Que Literal Trash – which is the name of the playlist but also the overall level of respect these songs receive by the general public. Low culture at its finest!! And ICYMI, catch the Nicstalgia episode with Bridget from Literal Trash 2004, I Am Trash, But I Am Free!!
🏆 Nicstalgia Trivia
“Sweet Dreams My LA Ex” was a song written for Britney Spears in response to JT’s “Cry Me a River”. It was turned down by her team and instead was the 2003 debut single from which British singer?

Last Week’s Answer
One-hit wonder power pop band Tommy Tutone is known for its 1981 hit that started a fad of people calling this phone number asking for Jenny. Funny enough, it is strikingly similar to my friend’s phone number 👀. What was the name of the song?
“867-5309 / Jenny”. Apparently, people really used to write phone numbers (of people they wanted to humiliate) on the walls of public bathroom with “for a good time, call” next to it. To add insult to injury, these were landlines, not even private numbers. It’s like the vintage equivalent of shitposting on Twitter or trolling on TikTok. I cannot!
