Danielle Petty from 90s Babes is featured on this week's episode of Nicstalgia. We reminisce about Tamagotchi parenthood, Beanie Baby ownership, and the ever-controversial Furby. There’s definitely a ‘played office’ as a kid to business owner pipeline, and we talk about the fun traits that Danielle’s digital art project, 90s Babes, is inspired by.
We play Now or Then, where Danielle either loves certain nostalgic items today or leaves them back in the 90s (but looks back on fondly upon them). I will be leaving popcorn shirts in the 90s…BYE!!!!

🛼 Haven’t You Heard?!
My fav things from the internet rn:
Loved this article from WIRED, Growing Old Online, about how Millennials are the first generation to be both young and old(er) on social media and how ‘we could seek to cast the net wider, to build weirder, less familiar, less marketable communities.’
SOCIAL MEDIA’S GOAL is saturation; it wants to be no less than everywhere. Here is a world where everything is all about you, and where you aren’t ever supposed to look away from the mirror. This mandated, obsessive self-focus makes it much too easy to take everyone else’s youth or age very personally. Struggles between the young and not-quite-as-young, the inevitable process of aging and all the questions that come with it, grow louder and sharper than they might have been in an offline world, where we had neither the opportunity nor the seeming obligation to look at ourselves and one another constantly.
As a kid, I played The Sims primarily to build a house, pick out furniture, and use the ‘motherlode’ cheat code to access an unlimited decorating budget. I must say, West Elm’s Home Design game has the same effect (without it taking 2 hours to load and crashing the computer).
Trigger warning: Furby!!!! Since it is spooky season, I did the closest thing I could to watching a horror movie: watching a Furby commercial from 1998. Extremely fun fact, the young girl featured in the beginning of this video is Melissa McIntyre (aka. Ashley from Degrassi!!!)
blink182 just announced that they are going on a world tour next year. (With Tom!!) ngl I feel a little sorry for Matt.
🛒 Supermarket Sweep
On this week’s Nicstalgia, we talk about various 90s treats & snacks like Dunkaroos, Lunchables, and Powerpuff Girls/TMNT popsicles from the ice cream truck. My personal fav snacks as a kid were Jax cheese puffs and the Orville Redenbacher popcorn that came with packets of artificial butter.
In the 90s, could you really go to the grocery store without pretending you were on Supermarket Sweep? (No.) I rewatched the entire series last year and I’m thrilled to share my favorite episode with you. The music, the hair, the outfits, the blaring siren at the end – it’s all truly a work of art.
💿 Hey Mr. DJ, put a [playlist] on
Playlist of the week:
Party Like It’s 1997 is back! Enjoy this eclectic mix of 90s songs inspired by the 'Drew’s Famous® Smash Hits Party Music' CD I had in 1998. These songs will no doubt remind you of playing with Beanie Babies, eating Hot Pockets, and beating your Skip It record.
🏆 Nicstalgia Trivia
While I didn’t have an extensive Beanie Baby collection, I did have Sneaky the leopard. (Don’t love this name, as it has a negative connotation, but okay.) What’s my favorite animal which I erroneously thought Sneaky was for the last 22 years??

Last Week’s Answer
One of Shawn’s favorite movies is a 1995 coming-of-age comedy film, where the main character ultimately learns how to thrive (or survive?? idk I didn’t see it myself yet lolol) by being himself. It also stars a pre-Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues (fellow Connecticut native) James Van Der Beek. What’s the movie called?
Angus. I meant to watch it this past week so that I could give you a review, but alas, my rewatch of The OC has taken precedence. Will keep you posted on that front.
