I sometimes get annoyed that the Y2K label gets applied to literally anything from the 2000s. I feel like 1999-2002 is a much more reasonable timeframe for it. Y2K is blobby tech and holographic crop tops and the vibes encapsulated in "Believe" by Cher! It's Scary Spice's alien-like pigtails and Tamagotchis and for some reason, every shade of blue ever, but especially baby blue! It's glitter makeup and frosted tips and rounded fonts! It's Napster and AIM and Ask Jeeves!!

I loooove your playlist and I'm gonna have to go through some of these old articles. I did already read the one about 13 Going on 30 Millennial edition, and now that movie would be made about someone waking up in 2026 from 2009...ugh, I feel so old lol.

Totally. I wrote a piece called "Stop calling it Y2K when you mean McBling" a couple years ago about this exact distinction. I will forever love icy blue everything!!!!!

Thank you so much!! Omg re: 13 Going on 30...you know what, I was just thinking about how in the 90s there were TONS of 70s movies, in the 00s there were tons of 80s, and though I was a little disoriented when Stranger Things did a flashback to the 90s (wasn't it only 10 years ago?!), I haven't seen the 20 year trend cycle play out in media at scale in the same way. Not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, or that being inundated by sequels and reboots isn't worse, but just an observation...

Ooh, I'll have to go find that one!

I feel like the 20 year cycle is starting to shorten now. Apparently there is 2010s nostalgia happening now? Which, like...I get it, the millennial optimism era was a good time lol. It just doesn't seem like enough time has passed for us to be nostalgic about it! (This is coming from someone who often dresses like Taylor Swift in 2012 haha.) Also, last week my husband and I sat down and played a bunch of our favorite songs from 2006 and it's wild to see how much the music videos have aged, but to not feel like it was that long ago.
