Tasafila from R3WIND (formerly Blockbuster DAO) is featured on this week's episode of Nicstalgia. Tasafila stands for ‘Take a second and fall in love again’, which I stan. He’s a literal neighbor to the last-standing Blockbuster store in Bend, Oregon and a friend who hangs out with me at the intersection of pop culture, nostalgia, and web3.
We explore the evolution of media, culture, and technology and ultimately how this content and culture bring us together. I loved geeking out over web3, how archival IP and ‘licensed nostalgia’ can enable a whole new era of content and pop culture, how integrity can be maintained in the space, and how exploitation of legacy brands ultimately replicates web2’s problems in web3.
We play Rent or Return, where Tasafila picks which ‘classic’ movies he was into (or not). He shares his curated movie picks, just like the Blockbuster employees do, except he doesn’t put Requiem for a Dream (traumatizing) in between Disney Pixar movies. Don’t worry, I talk about my favorite meta humor-filled, campy, extra, overtly gratuitous movie, Spiceworld, at relative length.

🛼 Haven’t You Heard?!
My fav things from the internet rn:
I am obsessed with retro technology. This article about Nokia ring tones made me go down the rabbit hole to find out what my very first ringtone was. It was “In the Islands” (you can listen at 9:09), because thankfully there’s a Vintage Virgin Mobile Kyocera K9 review on YouTube!!
Speaking of iconic cell phones – Is Gen Z bringing back flip phones? I’d say absolutely not, realistically, but I have considered doing it myself. (Can I disconnect my iPhone and go back to an enV²? I promise I won’t leave it in my green boucle fake Prada baguette handbag with a not-all-the-way-closed Vitamin Water and ruin it…again! 💀) I fine it genuinely endearing that people who only grew up with technology would want to experience what we had.
Because we all love a McBling moment – Baby Phat and Puma collab’d for a new collection out this week. Speaking of McBling, make sure to listen to last week’s Nicstalgia episode with Bridget from Literal Trash 2004. We played Trashy or Trendy, and then I polled the community to see what they thought too. We really hold this aesthetic close to heart lol. The results:
🗑 TRASHY
• Von Dutch trucker hats
• Ed Hardy
• Jersey Shore
• Playboy bunny motif
• Tanning stickers
• Pink/green/zebra specific decor combination
💅🏼 TRENDY
• bebe rhinestone shirts
• Juicy Couture tracksuits
• Victoria’s Secret Lovespell perfume
• Hair extensions and dyed platinum blonde hair
• Dangly belly button rings and nose rings
• Cheetah print
• Square acrylic French manicure
Sometimes I think I’m the only person that intellectualizes seemingly innocuous nostalgic things. On the other hand, adults wrote the cartoons that I watched as as kid, and now that I’m an adult myself, I have a broadened perspective. This is all to say that the themes of Hey Arnold! very much reflected the neoliberal ideologies of the 90s and urban decay and gentrification that affected working-class communities. Super interesting. Manifesting an appearance on the Stoop Kidz! podcast 👀
😇 I’m a Good Influence¹
Today, Vacation releases their Classic Whip sunscreen! This sunscreen brand has a retro 80s twist that I absolutely love as much as the product itself. The whip sunscreen is so light, smells so good, and is perfect for when I lounge on my deck eating olives and drinking an Aperol Spritz (or St. Germain Spritz) as if I am back on the Italian Riviera. My natural habitat, truly. I recommend the mineral sunscreen for the beach or pool; everyone will probably fall in love with you, Wendy Peffercorn style.
Step up your pajama game with Parade. This new collection is crazysexycool and you will look like an iconic angel that stepped right out of TLC’s Creep music video. (Which is what I strive to look like as I get in my 8 hours 😴) Use my code nicoletremaglio for 20% off!
Linda Evangelista. Naomi Campbell. Cindy Crawford. Christy Turlington. And now YOU. That’s right baby, it is time for your close-up!! Chillhouse’s new press on nail pattern, 90s Supermodel, is that little bit of bold glamour that you need day-to-day. Main Character Energy always. Use my code NICOLE10 for 10% off!
💿 Hey Mr. DJ, put a [playlist] on
Playlist of the week:
In honor of my *redDdd DreSSs* Nick Jonas computer sticker going semi-viral on TikTok (what a weird sentence to type), I would like to honor Perkatory, my favorite Connecticut-based coffee shop whose sticker also adorns my chaotic-good laptop.
I call Perkatory my ‘coworking space’ even though 1. I work alone 2. It is not a coworking space because I can only concentrate when punk rock music is blasting out of the speakers. This playlist includes over six hours of songs I have actually heard while sitting in Perkatory. If you are in CT, you need to stop by!!! (Or get their merch – my fav is the Bony Hawk tee lololol, and they recently stocked nostalgia-inspired items as well!)
🏆 Nicstalgia Trivia
In Spiceworld (the very meta Spice Girls movie about a movie about the Spice Girls), there was a scene that included the crime fighting quintet, Spice Force Five. What movie was this scene originally inspired by?

Last Week’s Answer
Can you believe Legally Blonde came out 21 years ago this summer?! What was unapologetically extra sorority sister Elle Woods’ college major before she went off to Harvard Law School to get Warner back become a badass lawyer?
Fashion Merchandising. As the valedictorian of my fashion department, I graduated in style. (I have never achieved anything else even remotely related to academia, so please humor me here.) I belted my graduation gown because it was too frumpy and wore nude 6” patent leather stiletto platforms from Bakers (RIP). Underneath the gown was a backless, lace dress from Urban Outfitters that I LOVED. Iconique.
